About me
Sarah Poppleton
Artist
I have become known for my contemporary landscapes in oils which are primarily concerned with the peculiar quality of light on that particular day. I am often inspired by transitory light effects - shadows, reflections and glimmers of light on water. I paint in a representational way but one in which I hope to convey my thoughts about the light and warmth in order to take the viewer further into that time and place than the mere scene. Each painting is unique and, I hope, uplifting.
I enjoy working outside, painting en plein air in oils, and this often invigorates my studio work. I have recently moved house and so now my studio is in Wiltshire, but I spend a fair amount of time in Cornwall too, attracted by the clear light and big skies, where I know I will always find inspiration.
During lockdown, I was frustrated by not being able to get to the sea, so have turned my attention to the natural beauty of flowers in still life set ups. I have particularly enjoyed trying to capture how the light strikes the petals and vases in different ways, and the relative translucency or reflective nature of these objects.
